The track adjuster holds tension in the undercarriage by pushing the front idler forward against a recoil spring, with a grease cylinder setting the position. When the cylinder leaks or the spring loses its rate, the track runs slack. A slack track throws off the sprocket, wears the roller flanges unevenly and, on a rubber track machine, is one of the most common causes of a thrown track.

Check tension whenever the undercarriage is inspected. If the track will not hold grease, or you are adding grease more often than you used to, the adjuster rather than the track is usually the part that needs replacing.

The track adjuster sets track tension by moving the front idler, so it is usually checked alongside the idlers and track rollers. Guide: setting track tension.
